Food And Drugs Authority To Supervise Destruction Of Drugs

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has appealed to manufacturers and retailers to notify the Authority to provide supervision before expired products are destroyed.

This would enable the Authority to assess the quantity and amount involved and issue certificates.

The Western Regional Manager of FDA, Mr. Abu Sumalia, told the Ghana News Agency in Takoradi that it was illegal for retailers and manufacturers to dispose of expired packaged food items, drugs, cosmetics and electrical appliances without supervision by officials of the FDA.

He said it would be more advantageous for retailers and manufacturers to inform the Authority before destroying their expired products because they would receive tax rebate when they filed their tax returns.

Mr. Sumalia said FDA would step up education for distributors of products so that they adhered to the required standards.

He added that the Authority would continue to regulate and exhibit vigilance on products under its supervision in order to prevent influx of inferior products on the market.
