Mrs. Matilda Amissah Arthur , Wife of the Vice President of Ghana have taken it upon herself to help raise awareness about the critical maternal issues in the country, in order to help raise awareness on maternal health for children and their mothers in the country by wiping away tears on the faces.

Personally, she has been working hard to contribute to the improvement of the welfare of our mothers and children through her own initiative and is working to increase access to quality maternal and infant health services in Ghana.
As part of her commitment she has toured the various health centers in the country and has given hope to the less privileged in society and also to see to the welfare of sick children in the country, so that she can help alleviate them from their suffering .

Through her interventionist programs in the area of health care delivery, Mrs. Matilda Amissah Arthur has also educated mothers on the need to seek early maternal health care before their time in order to avoid complications which would lead to maternal deaths and other factors associated with it.

Mrs. Amissah Arthurs primary objective is to help improve the lives and well-being of women, youth and the less privileged members of the society which is key and has championed the crusade against HIV/AIDS and Ebola through awareness and sensitization programs with Maternal and Child Health been her priority.

A strong advocate on issues relating to children, she also has been in the vanguard of fight for the education of children as a right together with health related issues.

As a professional Librarian she has carried out extensive sensitization programs in the society laying emphasis on enrollment, retention and completion of children’s education with the aim of seeing to it that children were treated with care because they are our future leaders.

Mrs. Matilda Amissah-Arthur has also been in the forefront of sanitation issues in the country and has consistently stated that environmental cleanliness is not government's responsibility alone but the individual as well.

According to her, primary healthcare starts with everyone especially at the time Ebola and cholera is around: she would always be a crusader for environmental cleanliness and has asked Ghanaians to observe strict environmental cleanliness in order to check the spread of the Cholera disease.

This she has done where ever she finds herself and has continuously donated in line with her commitment to improve healthcare delivery, especially for children across the country.

The wife of the Vice President with a lot of commitment and passion in every hospital that she visited makes sure she looks for the pediatric ward to interact with children on admission, support them with fruits, school bags, pencils, books, toys and wishes them a speedy recovery.

In all her presentations Mrs. Amissah-Arthur has commended the hospital and staffs for the good job that they are doing and encourages them to do more to ensure quality healthcare for the country, especially managing childhood illnesses and also discuss sanitation issues with them.

“Children are the future leaders, and I am someone who believes in growing with the young generation in the area of health care delivery,” she’s always stated.

These are some of the places Mrs. Matilda Amissah Arthur has visited and made donations to the Pediatric wards and also donated hospital equipment valued at millions of cedi’s.

The areas include Cape Coast Regional Hospital, Axim Municipal Hospital, Princess Marie Louis Hospital, Accra, Swedru Municipal Hospital in Agona Swedru ,Koforidua Regional hospital, Axim District Hospital , Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital, Tarkwa Municipal Hospital ,Suhum Municipal Hospital ,Taifa District Hospital ,St. Anthony's Hospital in Dzodze, in the Volta Region, Hohoe municipal Hospital , Sogakokpe District hospital. Eikwe Catholic Hospital, Newtown Health Centre in the Ellembelle Jomoro Districts of the Western Region.

These are all part of Mrs. Matilda Amissah Arthur program to assess maternal and child health services in order to supports national campaign to reduce maternal deaths and neonatal mortality in the country.

To add to her tall list of educating mothers on maternal health care on the 26th January 2013 she launched a Newmont health program called Help Babies Breathe .Trainer of Trainees on behalf of Newmont Ghana and Project CURE in Sunyani .

She said according to the National Health Service, at least 320 out of every 1000 under five years old die and out of this figure 120 of them are newborns and currently as a nation we have 32 new born deaths per 1000 births which is unacceptable.

Mrs. Matilda Amissah Arthur said the cause of the deaths have been found to be ,Infection , breathing problems ,Pneumonia and that breathing problems as we see in Ghana today is one of the causes of new born deaths . She recommended the establishment of a subcommittee of Newborn Care to update all essential guidelines and training manuals for new born care and coordinate all activities of the bodies concerned. So there is now a concerted effort towards the reduction of new born babies’ death in the country.

The Second Lady has also donated assorted items to persons living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIVs) at the Matthew 25 House in Koforidua and celebrated Christmas with them and pays them regular visits and is currently helping them to put up a Hospice in koforidua.

Mrs. Amissah-Arthur always educates and encourages the PLHIVs not to be self stigmatised but rather come out boldly to engage in vocations to keep them going.

The wife of the Vice-President is also a friend of Lepers in the country and has called on Ghanaians to show love to lepers by reaching out to them and also advised that as people we should learn to accept and integrate cured lepers into society, because the disease is curable.

The Second Lady, last December joined the Lepers Aid Committee, chaired by Very Rev. Fr Andrew Campbell, to raise funds for lepers through the program dubbed, A night of Musical and Choral Concert at the Christ the King Parish Hall in Accra .

Some few months ago, she joined the Lepers Aid Committee, chaired by Very Rev. Fr Andrew Campbell to mark World Leprosy Day with the inmates at Weija Leprosarium.

The day is observed internationally on the last Sunday of every January, to increase public awareness of the disease.
On her visit to them, she also took the opportunity to interact with some of them, shook hands with them and encouraged them and presented some bags of rice, plastic buckets, bowls and some unspecified amount of money to help one of them who had to undergo surgery at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

Mrs. Matilda Amissah-Arthur, has urged children in various orphanages to learn work hard and give maximum respect to their caregivers.

Some of the orphanages she has visited are Kinder Paradise, an orphanage at Prampram, in the Dangme East District,Raffiki, an orphanage centre owned by the Methodist Church at Winneba, Kokrobite Chiltern Centre an orphanage and a school and BASICS international in Chorkor.
