The Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council has announced that it will exhume and rebury the remains of the late Dr. J. B. Danquah, a member of ‘The Big Six’ in order to give the departed statesman a befitting burial 50 years after his demise.
The exhumation, reburial and final funeral rites which are slated for Saturday February 7, will be preceded by national symposium at the Accra International Conference Centre on Wednesday on the theme, “Service and Sacrifice in the birth and growth of Democratic Ghana.”
The ceremony, according to the traditional council is to commemorate Dr. J. B. Danquah’s contributions to the political development of the country and the Akyem Abuakwa state.
Dr. J. B. Danquah was burial at Kyebi in 1965 after he died at the Nsawam Maximum Security Prison where he was serving a jail term under the Preventive Detention Act but the Council believes the burial accorded him at the time, did not befit his status as a statesman.
Addressing members of the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council and journalists at the press launch of the reburial at his palace (Ofori Panin Fie) at Kyebi in the Eastern Region on Friday, the Okyenhene, osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, described Dr. J. B. Danquah as “a pathfinder, who lived his political life with truth and selflessness.”
“He was a man who was self-searching, a man who influenced greatly our journey to independence” adding, “he fought a good fight, he ran the race and thus he deserves a better resting place,” he said.
