Teams Avert Another Fire Outbreak In Tema

The timely intervention of a combined team of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) and the Fire and Safety Department of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) prevented a major fire outbreak at the Tema offices of Surfline Ghana, an Internet service provider, last Sunday.

The fire outbreak was confined to one of the rooms where back-up batteries and other electrical materials had been kept.

The incident triggered the fire alarm system and fire response procedures, while the GNFS was called in to put out the fire.

It occurred at Dennis House in Tema, the building that houses the Surfline Data Centre and other companies, including the GCNET, the UT Bank and some offices of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC).

Briefing journalists, the acting Head of Public Relations of the GNFS, Mr Ellis Robinson Okoe, said thick smoke was detected in the building about 4 p.m. last Sunday, but the timely intervention of the Fire Service saved the situation from getting out of hand.

"The fire alarms were on and they were triggered for people to know what was going on," he said.

Mr Okoe said on arrival, the fire fighters detected that the smoke was emanating from a room housing some back-up batteries.

According to him, the personnel managed to put out  the fire about 8 p.m.

Mr Okoe said in all, four fire engines and two water tankers, with the support from the GPHA Fire and Safety Brigade, were deployed to fight the fire.

He said the GNFS would investigate the cause of the fire and come out with a report soon.

The Brand and Communications Manager of  Surfline Ghana, Mr Edwin Amoako, expressed gratitude to the GNFS and the GPHA fire team for responding swiftly to bring the fire under control.
