<<Print>>Some Ghanaians are skeptical about government’s promise to solve the persistent energy crisis by the end of 2015.
President John Mahama on Tuesday appealed to Ghanaians to be patient with his administration as it makes efforts to find a lasting solution to the recurrent problem when he toured three power plants in Tema on Tuesday.
But some Ghanaians who spoke to Citi News on the worsening power situation and the president’s appeal said their patients have run out and they will only be convinced when the problem is solved.
One citizen was of the opinion that six years in power is long enough to effectively manage the power situation.
“Six years in power is no excuse and how long are we going to be patient? He [Mahama] said it last year that it was fixed, so is this a new problem or something that has been there already? We seem not to have any way around this. That is what we see now and most of us are tired! We’ve reached a point that we can’t take it any longer. We won’t believe whatever he is saying.”
Another was also of the view that it is not a matter of being patient because “the President keeps promising and if you are patient or not, we still find ourselves in the ‘dum’ situation. It’s no more ‘dumsor’ but the ‘dum’ situation so we just need our lights back on and he should stop promising.”
One also complained to Citi News saying, “we don’t believe in what he is saying because he is not a man who keeps his word. He will say this and then he will do another thing.”
“He keeps failing on that particular promise. Last year he said in May and the later, he gave another promise. It’s promise after promise. Businesses are collapsing and I don’t think being patient is good enough,” said another.
Another person also said the energy crisis has persisted for close to two years and Ghanaians do not have the patience to wait till the end of 2015 to get the problem sorted.
But government insists it is working seriously to rectify the problem and urged Ghanaians to bear with government.
Deputy Minister for Power, John Jinapor on the Citi Breakfast Show explained that the President makes “projections based on the information he gets – based on the timeline…machines are machines and anything can happen.”
