2016 NPP flagbearer has praised the late JB Danquah’s commitment to press freedom, which he believes has opened up room for some newspapers to pry into his health.

In a cheeky retort to newspapers who have made the health of the 2016 NPP flagbearer a regular staple, Nana Akufo-Addo said, “some [newspapers] seem to be better informed of my medical records than even my doctor and I”.

The three-time flagbearer was speaking at a ceremony to mark the 50th anniversary of the death of Dr JB Danquah.

Described as the doyen of Ghana's politics, Dr JB Danquah, a founding member of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) died under bizarre circumstances in the dungeons of the Nsawam prison.

Recounting some of the achievements of JB Danquah, he said that “in 1930, Danquah set up the Gold Coast’s first successful daily newspaper, the West African Times, subsequently the Times of West Africa. In his day, he was a fearless critic of Government”.

The camp of Nana Akufo-Addo has had to dismiss on several occasions, stories published by Ghanaweb and some pro-government newspapers, claiming that the health of the 70-year old leader is failing.
