PPP Elects Northern Regional Executive

The Progressive People’s Party (PPP), as part of re-organising and energising the party for victory in the 2016 election, has elected new northern regional executive to steer the affairs of the party in the region.
 
All card-bearing and fully paid up members of the party served as qualified delegates who came from the 31 constituencies in the Northern Region to cast their votes for their preferred candidates. 

Positions contested in the election included Chairman, Vice Chairman, Treasurer, Organiser, Secretary, Deputy Secretary, Youth Organiser, Education Secretary, Women Organiser and her deputy, Youth Organiser and his deputy.

In the hotly contested election, Mr Hamidu Napoleon Dawuni defeated the incumbent Regional Chairman, Alhaji Baba Yahaya, to win the chairmanship.

Vice Chairman
The Vice Chairman position was won by Isshaku Ibrahim Nayi, while the Regional Secretary position was won by Gausu Iddrisu Kasuli. Others are Regional Organiser, Kwame Mohammed Murtala; Deputy Regional Organiser, Abdul Razak Mohammed; Women’s Organiser, Imoro Maria, and Deputy Women’s Organiser, Musah Aisha.

 The rest are: Education Secretary, Abdulai Kamaldeen; Deputy Education Secretary, Yussif Gadafi; Treasurer, Hamidu Mohammed Alhassan; Youth Organiser, Muniru Hardi, and Deputy Youth Organiser, Daaima Yakubu Issahaku.

The Northern Regional elections, which started at 9 a.m. and ended at 9 p.m., saw representatives of other political parties, including the People’s National Convention (PNC) and New Patriotic Party, deliver their solidarity messages to the party.

A member of the Election Committee,  Alister Nelson, in an address, charged the newly elected executive to work hard to improve the fortunes of the party in the Northern Region.

Work in harmony
The chairman of the party, on behalf of the new executive, pledged to work in harmony with all party members to win more supporters for the party in the Northern Region.

He promised to deliver five parliamentary seats for the party in 2016, saying “with the elections done, the Northern Regional branch of the PPP would be intensifying the campaign to canvass for votes for the party in the region. The bright red sun is shining and the PPP is calling on all Ghanaians to be awake and vote for competent and incorruptible leadership.”

The election was supervised by the Tamale Metropolitan Officer of the Electoral Commission, Issah Andani Natogma.

The atmosphere was very calm as delegates comported themselves throughout the process. Police personnel who were deployed there to maintain law and order, had little to do. One thousand and thirty three delegates from 31 constituencies took part in the exercise.

Background
In accordance with the party’s constitution, the PPP has started organising elections at the regional level to elect officers to man the affairs of the party in the regions.

After embarking on similar exercises in the Brong Ahafo,Central,Eastern, Upper East and Upper West regions, Saturday, 31st January, 2015 offered the party the opportunity to see to the election of its northern regional executive. 

The election took place at the campus of the Tamale Polytechnic (T POLY) and was supervised by representatives of the Electoral Commission in the region, as well as some members of the party’s Election Committee from Accra.
