Drug Dealer Jailed

A cleaner, Awudu Yusif, has been sentenced to one year imprisonment  for possessing narcotic drugs without authority.

In addition, he  was fined  100 penalty units, equivalent to GH¢1,200.

Yusif had 42 wraps of narcotic drugs in his possession when he was arrested  by a police team.

Yusif pleaded guilty to the charge when he appeared before  an Accra Circuit Court, presided over by Mr Francis Obiri, and was sentenced accordingly.

The facts of the case as presented to the court by Assistant Commissioner of Police Atibilla were that on January 20, 2015,  Sgt Ben Aidoo, a police officer stationed at the Alpha SWAT Unit in Accra, and his colleagues while on patrol duty had information that Yusif had in his possession a quantity of dry leaves suspected to be Indian hemp at a drinking spot.

Sgt Aidoo said the team proceeded to the drinking spot and saw Yusif sitting on a chair with a polythene bag lying on a table close to him.

The prosecutor said a quantity of wrapped substances suspected to be narcotic drugs was found in the polythene. Sgt Aidoo  said Yusif was arrested when he claimed ownership.

During interrogation, he told the police that he bought the narcotic drugs from a customer at Nima in Accra for personal use but could not assist the police to apprehend the supplier.
