Nii Kweikuma IV, a Divisional Chief of James Town in Accra, has appealed to the people to collaborate with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to maintain environmental cleanliness.

He said the fight to live without filth was solely not the duty of the AMA but requires concerted efforts and commitment by all by support the National Sanitation Day initiative to avoid frequent visits to hospitals.

Nii Kweikuma made the appeal during a cleanup exercise at James Town together with Dr Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive to clean some part of Accra during the National Sanitation exercise.

He called on the AMA to step up education to create awareness among the people to refrain from dumping refuse into drains to prevent the spread of communicable diseases.

Dr Vanderpuije expressed gratitude to the chiefs for their involvement in the exercise to compliment government and the AMA efforts at improving sanitation to ensure a clean environment.

He said the AMA had taken measures to revamp environmental sanitation in the metropolis and one of such was the Conti Project, which targets improvements in health, sanitation, transportation and leadership efficiency for the city, through the construction of land fill sites and waste disposal plants, improvement of the sewage system and the provision of refuse trucks, among others.

He gave the assurance that his outfit would embark on an intensive education on the National Sanitation Day programme to create the necessary awareness among the people, especially the youth in Accra.

“I am happy with the turn up this month compared to last month’s,” he said.

The AMA Mayor appealed to everyone in the metropolis to support and cooperate with the Assembly to realise its vision of transforming the city.
