Regional Offices Of Department Of Urban Roads To Be Resourced

The Ministry of Roads and Highways is to ensure that regional offices of the Department of Urban Roads have the necessary resources, both human and material, to help the department undertake its mandate.

To this end, the sector Minister has directed that enough budgetary provision be made for office accommodation for the regional offices.

This year, new offices of the department would be provided in the Brong Ahafo and Volta regions.

The sector Minister, Alhaji Inusah Fuseini, announced this at the annual review conference of the Department of Urban Roads in Kumasi.

He said the establishment of the regional offices of the department has been necessitated by the need to reposition it to take on new challenges of managing the arterial and collector road network in the country’s centres while the assemblies develop their capacity to manage the local road network.

This, according to Alhaji Fuseini, is important for the country to consolidate the gains of the decentralisation exercise.

To this end, his ministry has engaged a consultant to undertake a reclassification of the road network throughout the country so that the responsibility of each agency in the management of the network shall be clearly defined.

Alhaji Fuseini said he expects the report of the consultant to be ready by the middle of this year so that critical decisions can be made in consultation with the relevant parties.

He said it is important that the Department of Urban Roads develops the capacity of the staff at the regional offices in order to protect the huge investment government continues to make in the road sector.
