The Metropolitan Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, has given indication to arrest children who are supposed to be in school but have found their way onto the streets.
He said it has gotten to a state where parents must take active part in ensuring that their children are in school. According to him, they can longer sit to see children waste their lives on the streets when they are supposed to be in school.
The mayor gave the indication yesterday when he cut the sod for yet another Millennium city School at the Anglican Cluster of School at Kwashieman in the Ablekuma north constituency.
He said he will take the first step by arresting and handing over to the police school going children who are selling ice cream, ice kenkey and ice water on the street when they should be in school.
The mayor’s decision stems from the fact that school are being built to end the shift system but some children still appear to be on the streets.
Despite this setback, statistics have shown that more children have enrolled in school and their performances have improved since the Millennium City School project started three years ago to end the shift system.
The sod-cutting ceremony is the third school project which is being built in the area and according to the mayor there is the collective need for all parents, teachers and religious organizations to help develop the education system with the building of more schools for access.
He urged all Ghanaians to support their leaders to be able to achieve more, irrespective of their political coloration, explaining that once the political campaign season is over there is the need to rally behind.
The representative of the Lord Bishop of the Anglican Church, Rev. Attuquaye Quaye, expressed gratitude to the government for the support.
He said it is a privilege for the church to see the project start, which is a tree-storey 18-unit classroom block and is expected to be completed by January, next year.
The Member of Parliament for the area, Mr. Joe Appiah, equally expressed gratitude to the government, noting that the mayor has proved to be a man of his words and that he has fulfilled all promises he had made.
