The upcoming District Assembly elections, due in March, this year, is gearing up to be an ex-convict affair, as the Electoral Commission of Ghana comes up for blame yet again for allegedly giving another ex-convict the right of way.
Allegedly, Caleb Kwabla Attah, Assembly member aspirant for the Valco Electoral Area in Tema, is an ex-convict.
Sources from Tema say the EC is very familiar with the details of Mr. Attah’s past brush with the law, but has gone ahead to allow him file nomination to contest the Assembly elections contrary to the electoral laws of Ghana.
Enquirer cannot independently verify, but the sources believe that a rogue electoral officer has allowed himself to be swayed with a bribe to allow the mockery.
The allegation about Caleb Kwabla Attah, being an ex-convict, who has been allowed to file nomination to run as Assembly member, is the third that has so far come to the attention of The Enquirer from sources since the beginning of this week.
The first was about another alleged ex-convict whose nomination has been received by the EC to run for Assembly membership in Tema new Town.
Initially, The Enquirer chose to feature the suspect in our report as anonymous. However, youth in the Dada Agbo Electoral area of Tema have since held a press conference and demanded that the EC rid nomination list for the 2015 Assembly elections of ex-convicts.
The Assembly Member for Dade Agbo, who is seeking reelection, is Fredrick Kojogah Dekagbe.
The Enquirer ran a front page story in which one Ibrahim Bako, an Assembly Member aspirant for Mampong Okai, in Dansoman, who is said to have successfully filed nomination, is similarly alleged by four residents of the electoral area to be an ex-convict.
In the story, the four residents Ben Yaw, Robert Kwaku, Daniel Kyei and Joseph Amoako – were reported to have directly demanded explanation from the EC, through a petition, as to why the alleged ex-convict had been allowed to file nomination for the Assembly election in Mampong Okai.
The Enquirer has gotten in touch with the Director of Elections at the EC, Mr. Sam Titi, who has since directed that enquire speaks to the people in charge of the EC in the Greeter Accra Region to respond to the issue.
The Enquirer solicited the veracity of the allegations doing the rounds, and explanation of their implications, from Mr. Alex Ankobia, Greater Accra Regional Director of the C through text, but h did not reply.
The text had been sent after attempts to speak to him via voice call had been severely impaired by poor mobile network reception.
Also, attempts to speak to Mr. Caleb Kwbla Attah failed as a contact of his given to The Enquirer turned out to be incorrect.
