The Amasaman District Court B has sentenced a 39-year-old labourer to three months imprisonment with hard labour for stealing eight bags of charcoal. Kwabena Oklu, an ex-convict, was said to have sold the stolen charcoal to one Grace Adjei Badu, a trader.
Oklu pleaded not guilty to the charge of stealing but the court found him guilty after a full trial.
For dishonestly receiving the stolen items, Badu was fined GH¢360 or in default serve a day in prison but she promptly paid the fine.
The facts of the case as presented to the court by Sgt Eric Darko were that on December 8, 2014, at about 10p.m., Oklu and one other (now at large), went to Badu’s house and told her that they were charcoal producers and had some in stock for sale.
Sgt Darko said Badu expressed her desire to buy some because she was in the charcoal business.
Oklu and his accomplice, on December 24, 2014, about 7:30p.m. went to the house of Peace Appau, the complainant’s house and stole eight sacks of charcoal valued at GH¢300.00, which the men sold to Badu.
Appau, on realising that her bags of charcoal were missing, reported the case to the police who subsequently arrested Oklu and Badu.
