Electrical Cable Blast At Weija Disrupts Water Supply In Accra

An electrical cable blast at the Weija Treatment Plant has disrupted water supply to the western and central parts of the capital city of Accra.

Areas such as Dansoman, Mallam, Kasoa and Korle Bu have been without water supply since Thursday as a result of the blast which resulted in power cut to the major water treatment plant in Accra.

According to the Chief Manager for Communications at Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), Mr Michael Agyemang, even though power has been restored and the plant has resumed pumping water, it would take some time for the pressure to build up before residents would start seeing water in their homes.

In an interview on Accra based Citi FM, Friday morning, Mr Agyemang said they couldn’t pump water into the city on Thursday as a result of the power outage.

Asked whether they suspected that the rampant power outages [dumsor] might have caused the problem, he said the GWCL could not tell what actually caused the blast and said that it would be for the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to be in the better position to explain.

He said the important issue was that the damage has been repaired, power restored and the plant has resumed pumping of water.
