Alhaji Collins Dauda, Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing, has disclosed that the government has funded 20,000 borehole projects at the total cost of GH¢17 million from the Consolidated Fund, over the last five-years.
According to him, the World Bank is also assisting the government with 48 million dollars to improve water delivery in the Greater Accra Region.
He was speaking at a day’s Water, sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) sustainability forum at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) on Wednesday, on the theme “Sustainable Services at Scale (Triple-S) in retrospect: Shaping the context for WASH sector partnerships at Scale”.
Alhaji indicated that since 2009, government and development partners have invested over 750 million dollars in the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Sector, but warned that the huge investments would not achieve the expected results, if services are not sustained”.
Mr. James Gunu, the District Chief Executive (DCE) of Akatsi North in the Volta Region, has stated that provision of potable water for the people in the rural areas could be sustained, if all boreholes were insured by the District Assemblies.
This he says, would ensure prompt repairs, should the facilities break down and the Assemblies have no funds to rehabilitate them.
Mr. Gunu noted that at times, people in the communities threaten political heads that they would not vote if the Assemblies do not rehabilitate their broken down hand pumps or water supply systems which have broken down.
“We sometimes visit some of our communities and you hear the people chant “no water, no vote”, because they are in dire need of potable water,” he emphasized.
