The Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress, Koku Anyidoho has defended President John Mahama’s efforts to solve the energy crisis.
He made the comments while reacting to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) upcoming demonstration scheduled for February, 18, 2015. Speaking on the upcoming protest, Anyidoho said he will not join the demonstration since the President is not sleeping on the issue but rather devising measures to resolve the crippling power challenges.
“I will not be on the streets tomorrow because President Mahama and the NDC government accept the fact that we are expereincing a debilitating power crisis. The President and his team are not asleep on the issue., If they were asleep on the issue I would have joined the demonstration,” he said
Anyidoho further remarked that the opposition group’s decision to protest is legitimate, saying “Let them go ahead, they have every legitimate right to do so and draw government’s attention to the crisis.”
“If we are in opposition, I would have led a similar demonstration.” He believes the NPP is doing exactly what it ought to do as an opposition group since its role is to “draw attention to national issues of great concern to everybody and not issues that are of myopic concern.” The party will embark on a protest to express its displeasure over what they described as Ghana’s unending power crisis. The 2016 Presidential Candidate for the NPP, Nana Akufo-Addo will lead the much anticipated ‘dumsor’ demonstration.
In a related development, the Police have rejected claims by the NPP that they attempted to sneak behind them to secure a court order to stop their “Wɔn Gbo” demonstration.
Speaking on Eyewitness News, the Accra Regional Police Commander, DCOP Christian Tetteh Yohonu insisted that “it is not true…We didn’t go to court to block tomorrow’s demonstration.”
