NPP Promises More Demo ... While NDC Discounts Impact

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has given an indication that it will organise more demonstrations across the country in the coming weeks against the worsening conditions in the country.

Following what it described as a successful protest in Accra last Wednesday, the party’s National Chairman, Mr Paul Afoko, disclosed that: "There are going to be more of these [demonstrations] and they may escalate."

Speaking during the NPP-led “Won Gbo” demonstration, he said what Ghanaians wanted was action and not promises as the John Mahama-led government was doing.

Thousands of NPP supporters and sympathisers thronged the principal streets of Accra in an anti-government demonstration aimed at forcing the government to sit up and solve the myriad of challenges facing the country, especially the worsening power crisis now referred to as 'dumsor’.

Relatedly, the second edition of the “Won Gbo” demonstration has been scheduled to take place in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region on February 25, 2015.

Meanwhile, the government has discounted any impact the February 18 demonstration has had on the economy.

Power Minister Dr Kwabena Donkor mocked the protest march as a keepfit exercise, describing it as an empty political activity.

In an interview with Joy FM, he said he remained focused to resolve the energy crisis.

A number of leading members of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) also said the protest was not necessary.

According to them, the NPP had no moral right to criticise the government about the country's power challenges since the NPP contributed to it.
