Nayele Cocaine Saga: State Drops Case Against Suspects

Peacefmonline.com can confirm that the state has dropped all charges it brought against some six persons who allegedly helped Nayele Ametefe in transporting cocaine to the United Kingdom (UK).

Agya Kwabena, PEACE FM's Special Correspondent for Court duties, reports that the Attorney-General, on Tuesday, filed a nolle prosequi against some six persons it alleged abetted the crime of exporting cocaine from Ghana.

The High Court in Accra consequently acquitted all the accused persons thus bringing closure to the case. The suspects have accordingly been acquitted and discharged.

Businessman Alhaji Dawood, Nana Akua Amponsah, Sadalia Nuhu, Foreign Affairs Ministry officer, Abiel Ashitey Armah, Theophilus Kissi, also a foreign service officer, and Ahmed Abubakr, a protocol officer at the VIP lounge of the Kotoka International Airport (KIA), were accused of aiding Ruby Adu Gyamfi, alias Nayele Ametefe to transport 12.5 kilograms of cocaine to the United Kingdom.

Alhaji Dawood and Ahmed Abubakr are said to have facilitated Nayele’s access through the VVIP lounge at the KIA while the two women have been accused of travelling with Nayele but absconded after she was arrested at the Heathrow Airport.

The six were subsequently granted bail of GHC 100,000 with three sureties.

The Daily Guide newspaper a few days ago reported that the case had long been concluded but because a powerful government official and a member of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has allegedly been implicated, the Attorney General's Department cannot push for full trial.

Nayele was arrested on November 10, 2014 for carrying 12/5kg of cocaine at London's Heathrow Airport. She is currently serving an eight year and eight months jail term in the UK.

She had, with the assistance of some state and security officials, breached Ghana's aviation security prior to her arrest in UK.

The six persons were arrested for their alleged role in the crime and consistently refused bail drawing anger from their lawyers.

When Nayele Ametefe was sentenced on her own plea by the Isleworth Crown Court in London, it paved the way for the accused to ratchet up their argument for bail.

Nayele had $23,000 and £6000 in her possession when she was arrested; monies said to be payment for carrying the cocaine.

This was revealed at the Isleworth Crown Court in the UK just before she was sentenced.
