Ghost School At Gyabaakrom

Investigations conducted by The Finder reveal that Gyabaakrom Local Authority Primary School in the Wenchi Municipality of the Brong Ahafo Region was burnt down two years ago, but the Ghana Education Service continues to post teachers to this non-existing school.

According to inhabitants of Gyabaakrom, the school, which consists of kindergarten and primary one to three, was razed down by fire two years ago and since then nothing has been done to reconstruct a structure for them.

The situation has affected the education of the pupils in the community. The older pupils have for the past two years trekked from Gyabaakrom to Branam, a nearby town, to attend school. Sometimes the pupils fail to attend school at Branam because they are either tired or the roads have been rendered immotorable as a result of rains.

Those in the nursery and kindergarten have no choice than to stay at home for the past two years without education.

A young man who spoke to The Finder on condition of anonymity said he has been transferred from one of the schools in Wenchi to Gyabaakrom L/A Primary School, but when he got there he realised there was no school.

He could not believe that the school was burnt down by wildfire two years ago yet the Municipal Education Office was not aware.

Desmond Krugu, a JHS one student who walks for almost two miles from Gyabaakrom to Branam for school, called on government to come to the aid of the community.

Efforts to get the comments of officials from the Wenchi Municipal Education office were not successful. Meanwhile, sources close to the GES office hinted that it is on record that teachers assigned to teach at Gyabaakrom L/A Primary School have been receiving their salaries.
