I Left March Against Ethnocentrism Because Some Members Smoked "Wee" In The Presence of Police - Ursula Owusu

Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West constituency, Hon. Ursula Owusu Ekuful has disclosed that some members of the march against ethnocentrism which took place in Accra Wednesday, smoked "wee” in the full glare of the police during the procession.

According to the Member of Parliament who abandoned the demonstration together with other members of the opposition New Patriot Party (NPP) due to threats on their lives from fellow demonstrators, this is an indication of the fact that Ghana Police practice selective justice.

“…I am saying this on authority and we have them on record. I can send you a copy. Some members of the march were caught on tape smoking wee in the full glare of the Police and they did nothing, but if it was Kwaw Kese, they would have quickly bundled him into cells,” she fumed.

A group of Ghanaians who are of the view that issues of ethnocentrism have to be nipped in the bud because of the perception of it being on the ascendancy matched through the principal streets of Accra to draw the attention of Ghanaians to the dangers associated with it.

This, many believe was occasioned by a leaked tape on which former Finance Minister, Yaw Osafo Maafo is alleged saying even though close to 90% of Ghana’s resources are concentrated in Akan-dominated parts of the country, it is non-Akans who come from regions which are poor in resources that are running the country.

Though, Ursula Owusu did not find anything wrong with Osafo Maafo’s statements, she and other members of the NPP joined the demonstrators to spread the awareness of the threat that ethnocentrism could pose to the country.

Mid-way through the match, she had to leave the demonstration because incessant name-calling and intimidation from other demonstrators prompted her to quite the match upon reaching Adabraka, a suburb of Accra.

She spoke in an interview with Kwame Nkrumah Tikese on Okay FM, Thursday morning.
