Tain DCE Held Hostage

The District Chief Executive of Tain, Mr. Samuel Jones Tawiah was held hostage in his official residence several minutes by some irate youth of Nsawkaw, the district capital on March 6, 2015. The action of the youth prevented the district from celebrating the Independence Day.

The youth who burnt lorry tyres on the road leading to the residence of the DCE were protesting against the decision by the DCE to send the celebration of the Independence Day to his hometown, Seikwa instead of Nsawkaw, the district capital.

According to the youth, they wouldn’t mind if the celebration was a national Farmers Day, which per government policy could be held in any part of the district, but Independence Day is always celebrated at the District Capital every year.

Canopies, which were raised at Nsawkaw for the occasion before the DCE’s sudden decision to move to Seikwa, were vandalized by the irate Nsawkaw Youth, notwithstanding the plea by some chiefs and elders of the town.

Some students and pupils from the respective basic and Senior High schools within the districts were dejected after rehearsing for over a week to take part in the march past.

The Nsawkaw Police, with support from the Wenchi Divisional Police Command intervened to bring the situation under control, but the youth have vowed to expel Mr. Samuel Jones Tawiah from the town, emphasizing that: “If Nsawkaw does not deserve the status of a district capital, go to your hometown, Seikwa, which qualifies to be a district capital.”

Information gathered indicated that the Brong-Ahafo Regional Minister, Eric Opoku met the DCE on Saturday, March 7, 2015, for a brief, whilst the Chiefs of Nsawkaw met the youth on Sunday on how best they could calm the nerves of the agitated youth.

In a related issue, the 58th Independence Celebration in Techiman was nearly marred by two renowned members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Kwadwo Agyei (Kwadwo Cocaine) and Gabriel Attipoe (Commander One) who turned the parade ground into a boxing ring and engaged in a pound for pound exchange of blows.

After separating the two, the police arrested them, took their statements and transferred the case to the Brong-Ahafo Regional Police Headquarters.

They have been engaging in media war due to a seeming division of the NDC in Techiman, with the two incumbent Members of Parliament, Alex Kyeremeh of Techiman North and Agyei Mensah MP for Techiman South on one side, fighting against the current MCE of Techiman Philip Oppong Amponsah and Minister for Tourism Elizabeth Agyare on the other, fighting for the parliamentary slot.

Mr. Kwadwo Agyei in believed to be a supporter of the two incumbent Members of Parliament and Gabriel Attipoe is a supporter of the current MCE and the Tourism Minister.
