Media Urged To Protect National Unity

The Upper West Regional Minister, Amin Amidu Sulemani has noted that, the print and electronic media stand to divide Ghana as a nation, rather than portraying our commonness, shared values and our sense of national unity.

According to him, the transformation the nation was yearning for would be a mirage if the nation becomes divided. “Let us, therefore, rekindle our spirit of patriotism and together rebuild our dear nation”, he advised. .

The Regional Minister made this observation at the 58th Celebration of Ghana’s Independence Anniversary with the theme: “Achieving transformation through national unity,” and appealed to Ghanaians not to wear political lenses and see everything along political lines.

Sulemani urged Ghanaians to use their energy and resources for the growth and development of the nation and eschew unnecessary partisanship and the over-flogging of religious, tribal and other differences.

“Achieving the transformational development requires sacrifice, hard work and a deep sense of national unity, devoid of unnecessary partisanship”, he stated.

The Regional Minister commended the chiefs and people of the region for remaining united and continuously charting a common course despite the tribal, religious, cultural and political differences.

He said land issues which are lately becoming security challenges in the region must be addressed through our time tested norms, customs and traditions.

Sulemani urged all the people in the region to maintain the prevailing peace to ensure that the region which is the poorest in the country develops in tandem with the rest of the country.
The Minister expressed worry over the poor performance of the region in the Basic Education Certificate Examination in recent time.

According to him, the region recorded 46.1% pass in 2012 which declined to 40.9% in 2013 and further declined to 28.81% in 2014. He lamented that some schools even scored zero per cent pass.

He has, therefore, called on all stakeholders, School Management Committees, Board of Governors, Parent Teacher Associations and the communities to get more involved with the affairs of the schools.

Sulemani advised all students and pupils in the region to take their studies more seriously and be obedient to their parents and school authorities.

He also commended men and women of the security agencies for maintaining the peace in the region and defending the sovereign integrity of the nation.
