Ghanas 2017 AFCON Bid A Misplaced Priority Kofi Amoah

Prominent economist, Dr. Kofi Amoah has kicked against Ghana’s prospective hosting of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, describing it as a ‘misplaced priority’.

Ghana is one of three shortlisted countries vying for the hosting rights for the next edition of the tournament.

The West African giants are going head-to-head against Gabon and Algeria following reports of the withdrawal of Egypt who were originally amongst the shortlisted countries.

But Dr. Kofi Amoah, who chaired Ghana’s last hosting of Africa’s flagship competition in 2008, believes it is a waste to bid for the 2017 AFCON especially having failed to make good use of the massive infrastructure put up for the 2008 edition.

“Ghana going for the bid in 2017 AFCON is a misplaced priority,” he said.

Dr. Amoah added: “Some of the good things which were supposed to come have not materialized. I think it is suicidal and it is criminal not to finish the investment of the people’s money and then go in for another tournament.

“Let’s do first things first and I think it is not proper for us to go in for this tournament.

“The huge edifice of gargantuan investments is rotting away and we’ve not been able to manage them well.

“We need to hand these investments into competent hands to ensure we get the needed returns from it rather than leaving them and going to host another tournament.”
