Ofosu Ampofo Lashes At Afari Gyan

Former Local Government and Rural Development Minister, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo has described as unfortunate the fact that the state has lost several millions of cedis due to a blunder on the part of the Electoral Commission.

Ghc317 million out of GHC327 million budgeted for the District Level elections has gone down the drain following a Supreme Court ruling that the Electoral Commission (EC) should start the process all over again.

In parliament on Tuesday, Chairman of the Electoral Commission, Kwadwo Afari Gyan apologized for the blunder saying he was misinformed.

He however added that the commission will need Ghc90 million more to organize another election.

Speaking to the issue on PEACE FM's morning show ‘Kokrokoo’, Ofosu Ampofo said it is an “indictment on Afari Gyan’s personality especially looking at the number of years he has done this work”.

He opined that the suspension of the district assembly and unit committee elections was a dent on the image of Dr Afari Gyan, adding that by this avoidable singular act, the EC's boss hard-earned reputation and his immense contribution to Ghana's peaceful electoral process have all been lost.

It is very unfortunate…I am at a loss as to why the Electoral Commission decided to open nomination when they knew the CI has not fully matured. I don’t know who misled them because I thought they have done this work for a long time. It is a pity that Afari Gyan after his wonderful work done in the past will tarnish his reputation. It has become a blot on his reputation…but I don’t know why this happened,” Samuel Ofosu Ampofo said.
