Prez Mahama Cautioned Against Frequent Ministerial Shuffles

A Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana Alidu Seidu has cautioned President Mahama against frequent ministerial reshuffles if he wants to his ministers to work effectively.

Mr Seidu said although the President has the right to demonstrate that he is in charge, constant reshuffles indicates “huge governance crisis”.

President Mahama made some major changes at some ministries over the weekend.

The reshuffle saw sports minister Mahama Ayariga move to the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, with Minister of State at the Presidency, Alhaji Dr. Mustapha Ahmed (MP) taking over as Minister for Youth and Sports.

But Dr Seidu is concerned about the numerous reshuffles in the Forth Republic, saying they have not yielded much results.

He noted that the constant changes are signs that the government is not serving the needs of the people and is being unfair to the “talents” appointed as ministers.

In his view, people appointed as ministers should be given enough time to experiment with their talents to prevent the loss institutional memory. According to him the situation cripples efforts to address challenges at the various ministeries.
