A former Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the United Kingdom and Ireland branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Theophilus Kofi Ampah, has said the NDC must get its act together and prepare a solid campaign strategy towards the 2016 elections.
“Our mantra should not be what we will do for Ghanaians but what we have done and what we will do more when our mandate is renewed,” he advised.
In an interview, he cautioned the party against internal bickering that was reported in the media.
That, he said, was because the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), which desperately wanted to win power, would use any negative thing that occurred both within the NDC party and the government to paint a bad image of the party.
He has, therefore, charged party faithful to stay united, focused and endeavour to handle internal challenges without resorting to washing their dirty linen in public.
“Let’s discontinue those practices and as much as possible, try to sing from the same hymn sheet,” he urged.
He said this in an interview with the Daily Graphic over the weekend in Accra.
Mr Ampah, who was also the NDC Parliamentary Candidate for the Gomoa West Constituency in the 2004 elections, entreated the party members to remember that the party’s continued stay in power was anchored on unity and that anything else would not be in the interest of the party.
“We must always remain conscious of the fact that nobody will want to vote for a divided party and so to maintain a positive image, we must learn to manage our internal challenges carefully,” he said.
He urged party faithful to not give any chance to the NPP to have any negative reports that they would use as a trump card during the campaign period, saying, “Let’s continue to trumpet and promote the good works that our President and his team are doing for the good people of Ghana.”
According to Mr Ampah, the flagbearer of the NPP, Nana Akufo-Addo, recently said that if the 2016 polls were free and fair, then he would win.
“That means that if he loses the 2016 polls, then the elections have not been free and fair,” he said, adding that by so doing, Nana Akufo-Addo was sowing seeds of confusion in the minds of NPP supporters that if they lost the 2016 polls, then the elections had not been free and fair.
For him, it was unfortunate that the NPP had continuously sought to malign the integrity of the Chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC).
He said, “this is a man under whose watch both the NDC and the NPP have won and lost elections. Therefore, his credibility should not be questioned. Rather, he deserves our commendation and not condemnation”.
Dr Afari-Gyan, he said, was at the twilight of an illustrious career and must be given the space to retire honourably.
