A group calling itself the Volta Youth Alliance (VOYA) is demanding of the government their fair share of development projects in the Volta Region.
According to the group, while their colleagues in the Ashanti Region could organise a street march to showcase development projects being undertaken by H.E. John Dramani Mahama in that region, they in the Volta have nothing to show.
“Without fear of any intimidation, we are sad to note that the story is entirely different in the Volta Region, now sarcastically referred to as the ‘voter’ region. The region has chalked zero success thanks to the efforts of government appointees and party executives,” the group said in a statement.
They noted with concern that in spite of the vision of the President to transform the region, its major challenge has to do with the lack of committed leadership who would serve as the vehicle for the realisation of that dream.
They also described the leadership of the party and government appointees in the region as self-seeking individuals who do not have the development of the region at heart.
“The youth now sleep with one eye on, with the fear of being pursued by regional executives and government appointees in any slightest attempt to question their performance. We know the good dreams the President have for Volta Region, but the vehicles to drive such dreams successfully to their full realisation are conspicuously missing since party executives and appointees are observed consistently not to have shared his dreams and can aptly be described as worrying,” the group noted.
According to them, the President’s promises to build a regional teaching hospital, fishing harbour, a sports stadium, salt factory and airstrip and many other projects in the region are yet to be fulfilled.
“We even wonder how the first batch of 43 medical students admitted at the University of Health Allied Sciences (UHAS) in November last year would be doing successful clinical as their studies demand.”
Director of Operations of the group, Alhaji Belo Afaglo told The Finder that all attempts to get the President’s attention to address their concerns have all proved futile. He said they have on two occasions sent letters to the seat of government about their concerns but are yet to receive any response.
According to the group, they would be left with no other option than to hit the streets in protest if they do not see any sign of commitment by the President to fulfil all the promises he made to the region.
“As youth, we have resolved to hit the streets with our concerns in the coming week if nothing changes, since the days of timidity, fear of intimidation, threat and extreme submission are over.”
Alhaji Belo hinted that but for the challenges the group had with arrangement with the police on which routes to take during their demonstration, they would have embarked on their demonstration today.
He, however, noted that negotiations are also still ongoing to arrive at a new date for the demonstration.
