Armed Robber Shot Dead By Accomplice

A member of an armed robbery gang was mistakenly shot dead by his accomplice when they attacked a group of small-scale miners at Wassa Nanako in the Wassa Amenfi East district of the Western Region last Monday.

After realising that one of their members had fallen, the rest of the gang abandoned their mission and took to their heels.

The body of the yet-to-be-identified robber has since been deposited at the Wassa Akropong Government Hospital in the Wassa Amenfi East District.

Incident
Speaking to the Daily Graphic, the Wassa Akropong District Commander of Police, Assistant Superintendent of Police Mr Isaac Kumnipah, said the police were currently looking for the other three robbers.

He explained that at about 8:30 p.m. last Monday, one Kwabena Agbenyo, a small-scale miner of Wassa Domeabra, reported the incident to the police.

The commander said the miners were returning to Adiembra from the Wassa Nanako mining site with quantities of sand concentrate (black sand) yet to be processed into gold to their residence after the day’s business.

According to Mr Kumnipah, on reaching a section of the road at about 7.30 p.m. a gang of four robbers wielding single-barrelled shotguns emerged from the bush and ordered them to stop.

He said one of the robbers subsequently shot at the miner carrying the black sand but missed his target. The bullet rather hit a member of the armed robbery gang who was on the same path with the miner.

“Unfortunately, the bullet meant for the one carrying the sand rather hit the ribs of one of the armed robbers and he died on the spot,” the commander stated.

He said the robbers, out of fear, bolted and left the lifeless body of their colleague in a pool of blood.

Mr Kumnipah said investigations were currently ongoing to apprehend the other three robbers currently at large.
