Is Mama Pat A One Term MP?

The once affable and popular female Member of Parliament to emerge from Ashanti region in recent history, Madam Patricia Appiagyei, may be on her way out of parliament as plot to make her one term MP thickens.

Madam Appiagyei, popularly called Mama Pat, a former mayor of Kumasi metropolitan assemply, who has suddenly become a pariah in her once darling constituency, Asokwa, in the city of Kumasi, has not been helped by the ‘conduct’ of her hubby, Dr K K Sarpong, a former boss of Tema Oil Refinery.

The ex-Chief Executive of Kumasi Asante Kotoko, now Board Chairman of Royal Bank, has hauled the club to a Kumasi High Court for owing him an amount of five hundred and thirty-six thousand, two hundred and forty-seven Ghana cedis (GHC 536,247.00).

These are monies he insists were due him when he was the Executive Board Chairman of the club, for the period between 1st January 2011 and 31st July 2013.

His football fraternity ‘opponents’ and political rivals of his MP wife, have ceased on this opportunity, and are now propagating to the world that Mama Pat’s husband, K.K Sarpong has committed a sacrilege by dragging the king of Asante, Otumfou Osei Tutu II who is also ‘the owner’ and life Patron of the club, to court.

This situation has bolstered the confidence of her predecessor she humiliated at their party’s primary only three years ago, Maxwell Kofi Jumah, who has openly warned her to throw in towel or face similar humiliation she put him through prior to the 2012 elections.

The former deputy Local Government Minister in the Kufuor administration, himself, a former Kumasi mayor, was recently reported in the media to have warned Mama Pat to rescind her decision of seeking reelection or risk being humiliated.

Citing himself as an example, Kofi Ghana, as he is popularly called, said he was humiliated in the 2011 primaries because he failed to heed to wise counsel and “I don’t want Mama Pat to face a similar fate”.
“I will advise her not to contest because the grounds is not favorable for her but if she does, I will give her a run for her money” he added
Mr Kofi Jumah made this comment after a group he is alleged to have commissioned picked forms for him in a bid to unseat the incumbent Asokwa legislator.

This, coupled with the political capital her opponents are making out of her husband’s legal suit against the overlord of Ashanti, may have putting the fear of the devil in the once outspoken and vociferous former Mayor of Kumasi, pushing her running riot in the media

In an interview with Ultimate radio last week, Mama Pat was reported to have accused Kofi Jumah of hiring some universities students to drug dent her hard won reputation.

“It’s unfortunate that my predecessor who is hungry for power has taught all these young boys [how to use abusive words]. I know them by name and I have records of their recordings and everything.

“You will observe that the hon. Kofi Jumah is not talking because the last time we were in contest, he came out with some accusations–he knows that he’s got very slippery mouth: he will come out with all kinds of, sorry to say, nonsense that people will not appreciate–so now he’s engaging all these young boys from the University.

“But I feel very sorry for them because if you want to be in politics, and in life, you have to learn from people who have good image, you need to have good role models and not role models like the one who barks,” She stated.

Reports are that, Mama Pat’s opponents have taken advantage of the NPP’s decision to suspend its affirmative policy and have latched on her hubby’s grievance with Kotoko to pitch him against the popular Ashanti king and owner of the Porcupine warriors.

The raging feud between the former KMA Mayors dates back to 2011, where Mama Pat beat Kofi Jumah by 275 to 139 votes at the NPP’s primary in the Asokwa constituency.

Ahead of the acrimonious contest, Kofi Jumah took his contender, Mama Pat, to the cleaners, alleging that unlike appointments into public office, where favors of all sorts, including sexual ones, could be traded, same could not be done with being voted an MP.

His comments were believed to be subtle swipe at Mama Pat, who was appointed Mayor of KMA by former President Kufuor.
