We Want A Credible Electoral Commissioner - Sammy Awuku

National Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called for an open dialogue to be held on the potential candidate to replace the incumbent Electoral Commissioner Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan as he proceeds on retirement in June.

Speaking on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo", Sammy Awuku supported the call that there should be in-depth consultations with the Council of State to appoint an honourable person for the position.

According to him, any person chosen to fill the void at the Electoral Commission (EC) should not have any skeletons in his or her closet.

My biggest fear is that if we go for somebody who is heavily tainted and partisan, the opposition parties (not party but parties) will go into the election with the impression and perception that the referee standing there; we can no longer cooperate with the referee. So, due to that (even so), the outcome of the results will turn into prejudice,” he said.

Sammy Awuku further noted that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is looking out for a credible Electoral Commissioner to lead Ghana's electoral process.

We want somebody who can bring credibility to the electoral process because elections are not an event. It is a process….Let us not close the doors for dialogue or else it would be an extremely dangerous precedent", he noted.
