Government scrapped teacher trainee allowance in 2014 but there have been several calls, including demonstrations to compel government to reintroduce the policy.

 

Speaking on Ho based Volta Premier FM, Dr. Bawumia said the scrapping of the allowances by the governing NDC has affected the quality of health and education delivery in the country.

 

“When we come in and restore the nursing training allowance, it will be for everyone. When we come in and restore the teacher training allowance, it will be for everyone.

 

He said the party, when voted into power in 2016 will work together as a team to achieve the feat.

 

“We are trying to build a globally competitive economy. We are a team. If it was a football we will have eleven players but now we are a team of ten players in ten regions. Every player has a position to play in this team and you cannot say that if you are team and you want to build a globally competitive economy you are going to ignore one of your players, you will fail if you do that.”

 

The NPP vice presidential candidate is currently on a familiarization visit to the Volta region, where he is meeting and interacting with party executives at various levels.

 

Various institutions and groups have kicked against the decision by the government to scrap the teacher trainee allowance.

 

Members of the Ghana National Association of Teachers(GNAT) earlier criticised government for taking such a decision, saying it failed to involve the Association before it went ahead to implement the decision.

 

The General Secretary of GNAT, Irene Duncan-Adanusa, said the Association was ready to dialogue and think through the policy’s implications for the education sector of the country, saying “if nothing is done, the policy would be met with a fight and as the matter progresses we will know which form the fight would take.”
