The five were among a mob of protestors captured on police camera, rioting and burning car tyres on the streets and around the chief's palace at Somanya.

 

One of the irate youth who spoke on condition of anonymity, denied causing riots as alleged by the police, but said they were rather searching for their late chief whose remains have been exhumed by unknown persons from the Royal Mausoleum last Thursday.

 

He said they suspected the Nuer Family, one of the three royal families in Yilo-Krobo to know the whereabouts of the remains of their late chief, and that they were only sending a warning for them to return the body to its lawful resting place.

 

Meanwhile, the Akuse Police Commander, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Francis Ackah, who confirmed the arrest to The Ghanaian Times said, the youth did not obtain police permit before embarking on the demonstration, but took the law into their own hands to cause riots on the streets.

 

He said the five people arrested would be transferred to the Koforidua Regional Police Command later in the day, and would be arraigned before court.

 

ASP Ackah said anyone with any allegation should proceed to court for redress, stressing that no individual has the mandate to take the law into his own hands.

 

It was alleged last Thursday that the remains of the late Nene Narh Dautey Ologo, Paramount Chief of Yilo Krobo Traditional Area, was exhumed from the Royal Mausoleum by unknown persons.

 

The allegation sparked tension in the area, with the Ologo family accusing the police of knowing the whereabouts of the body, since it was exhumed shortly after the police arrived at the chiefs palace, claiming to be there to provide security.
