Nigerian, 27, Arrested For Attempting To Smuggle 65 Parcels Of Cocaine

The Tema Regional Police Command has arrested a 27 year old man for attempting to smuggle 65 compressed parcels of substance suspected to be cannabis sativa, popularly referred to as marijuana valued at GHC2,400.

The suspect, Ebuka Uche, a cosmetic dealer from Anambra State in Nigeria was arrested aboard a passenger vehicle travelling from Dzemeni in the Volta Region to Tudu in Accra.

The substances, which were neatly packaged in a fertiliser bag was covered with huge quantities of second hand clothing.

Briefing the Graphic Online, the Tema Regional Public Relations Officer, ASP Juliana Obeng, said policemen on duty at the Asutuare Junction in the Dangme West District of the Greater Accra Region at about 7: 40 am, detected the parcels in the booth of the vehicle during a routine check along the stretch.

She indicated that the suspect, who claims to have arrived in the country in April 18, after being introduced into the business by a Nigerian friend admitted ownership of the parcels when they were detected.

Second Hand Clothing

According to ASP Obeng, Uche, upon arrival in the country visited the Kantamanto market in Accra, where he purchased quantities of second hand clothing for the purposes of concealing the consignment.

Ebuka, she indicated, told the investigative team that he was introduced into the business by his Nigerian based friend to purchase the substance from Ghana and exported to Nigeria where he could make huge profits after his cosmetic business fell apart.

The consignment, she said were being kept at the police exhibit centre, while a fill scale investigations were conducted.

She said the substances would be subjected to laboratory analysis.
