General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah has lauded the decision by some Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Lecturers who have openly declared their support for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming 2016 elections.

Some KNUST lecturers, known as KNUST NPP Frontliners, on Monday, openly declared their support for the opposition party in next year's general polls.

According to the group, made up of senior members and senior staff of the university, the NPP remained the best alternative to the NDC whose governance had allegedly crippled the sensitive sectors of the economy and brought untold hardships to the ordinary people.

Speaking at the inauguration of the group on the university's campus, the President of the group, Dr Kwabena Boadu, said there is the need for intellectuals to openly participate in frontline politics of the country.

But some have condemned the move by the University lecturers to form a partisan political group saying it is unethical and dangerous to the university community. 

Critics are of the view that such lecturers may attempt to victimize students who disagree with them politically.

They also argue that the lecturers were hired to lecture and not to do partisan politics, which is why the university authorities must act expeditiously to clip their wings before they cause any havoc. 

However, the formation of the group appears not to have surprised the NDC's Chief Scribe.

He has welcomed the group's creation saying its emergence will help strengthen democracy and also expose the lies and hypocrisy associated with some professional bodies in the country.  

“Every political party has its agenda...and so they speak to issues with a political identity. But there are those who confuse the public with lies that they are neutrals on the ground and yet have political leanings. If everybody declares their political lineage, the hypocrisy will end and people will see where they belong,” he stated.

“Sometimes the media rely on the clergy for non-partisan opinions but they end up speaking as if they are either NDC or NPP Propaganda secretaries and when they speak as God’s servants, it becomes difficult to question them and they get away with it...I am not afraid to speak as an NDC member but those who hide behind the clergy and other professional bodies to dabble in politics should come out like the way these KNUST Lecturers have exposed themselves,” he told Okay FM’s "Ade Akye Abia" host Kwame Nkrumah Tikese.

He maintained that it is good that the lecturers have come out openly to declare their political affiliation as this will help him to respond to them in a political way whenever they speak; emphasizing that those have not declared their political position should not with hypocrisy and lies.

To him, the KNUST lecturers openly declared their political colours because God has exposed them.

He also pleaded with the KNUST NPP Frontliners not to indoctrinate students to believe in their political ideologies.
