The Provost of the College of Distance Education of the University of Cape Coast, Professor George K.T. Oduro, has advised Ghanaians to not turn philanthropists only when they are nurturing political ambitions.

He said currently, people had turned patriotic and philanthropic just because they had ambitions of contesting elections.

He indicated that every nation required the spirit of volunteerism in order to accelerate and ensure equity in the development of communities.

Presentation
Prof. Oduro was speaking at a ceremony at which the University of Cape Coast (UCC) branch of the Zenith Bank presented a multi-purpose photocopier machine and books to the Agona Asafo Community Library. 

The gesture was made after Prof. Oduro, on whose initiative the library was built, solicited  the bank’s support for the library.

Prof. Oduro initiated the library project with support from other individuals and organisations to help the children from his home town, Agona Asafo, to develop reading habits.

He noted, “Volunteerism is gradually dying in our communities, and this is not good for the development of these communities.

“Don’t just do something because you have a political ambition,” adding that the development of our communities must be of genuine concern to all. 

Reading habits
He advised children to commit more of their time to reading to improve their literacy and numeracy skills.

This, he observed, would help them to improve significantly their performance at the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

He thanked the Zenith Bank for the support.

Nana Yamfo Asuako XI, the Chief of the area, thanked Prof. Oduro for his continuous support to the community and advised the pupils to make optimum use of the library.

The Branch Manager of the bank, Mr Mathew Yankey, said the presentation to the community was part of the bank’s social commitment to developing people.

He said he was optimistic that the items would encourage reading habits among the children.
