Mr George Kumi, a former Ambassador to Libya in the erstwhile New Patriotic Party (NPP), on Tuesday filed his nomination to contest the NPP's primaries in the Sunyani East Constituency.

He is contesting with Mr Kwasi Asomah-Cheremeh, the NPP Member of Parliament, who filed his nomination two weeks ago.

Mr Kumi who is also a former High Commissioner to Nigeria, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) after presenting his nomination forms that he was unhappy the Sunyani Municipality still lagged behind in development.

He said most of the communities in the municipality lacked basic social facilities such as toilet and potable drinking water.

“I will make sure that every household in the Municipality benefited from in-house toilet to improve on the sanitation situation here,” the former Ambassador stated.

Mr Kumi appealed to his followers to guard against provocative statements in their campaign, and urged the entire party members not to allow the internal elections to divide them.

He said the chances of the NPP in the 2016 elections would be narrow, if issues such as petty bickering and internal wrangling were not resolved.

Mr Kumi said that the 2016 general elections were crucial to the NPP, and the party needed personalities like him to contest the Sunyani East constituency seat to retain it, and consequently ensure a landslide victory in the presidential election.

Mr Lawrence Amponsah, Second Vice Chairman of the NPP, Sunyani East Constituency, entreated the contestants to base their campaigns on issues and avoid personality attacks.
