Akufo Addo Worries Fears It Will Affect Victory 2016 Agenda

The Flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo Addo has expressed dismay at the mass resignation of party executives to vie for parliamentary seats across the country.

According to sources, Nana Addo made this known at a recently held National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Accra.

The Presidential hopeful at the meeting stated that a party like the NPP which is in opposition needs to be serious and exhibit strong character to prove that they would be a formidable force in the upcoming elections to gain support from the public.

Aside the party’s flagbearer, many a party sympathizer have also proposed that the NPP takes a second look at the situation where office holders abandon their post and seek their individual interest against that of the party.

“I think the delegates should punish them severely at the primaries for abandoning the party and seeking their personal interest. When you leave the party at this crucial moment where we are going into to a serious election just because of an MP ambition who do u expect to steer it to victory”, an NPP stalwart who pleaded anonymity told this paper last Monday.

However, a large number of executives of the party at the constituency and regional level have resigned to contest parliamentary seat in various constituencies abandoning the general interest of the party and rather chasing their personal ambitions.

Another helder of the party was reported to have said at the NEC meeting that “why are you ignoring the general interest of the party for your personal ambitions? This party needs to gain power in 2016 that was why you were handed power to steer the affairs of the party”.

He also proposed that delegates in the near future should look at those who contest very well as it goes a long way to affect the party.

The swelling sentiments come few weeks after a group calling itself Concerned Polling Station Executives and Worried NPP Youth raised similar concerns.

The group was of the firm conviction that the 2012 general elections were lost partly because persons like Mr. Anthony Karbo, national youth organizer, resigned few months to the elections. “[Because of his action] the youth front of the party became leaderless as it could not even organize or train effective polling station agents for the elections. It led to the party being represented by half-baked polling station agents some of whom lacked basic writing and arithmetic skills.”

According to them in the Ashanti region alone, about 20 persons have resigned their positions to contest the parliamentary primaries neglecting party structures to crumble

Some people who have resigned include former Oforikrom constituency Chairman, Dr. Kwabena Marfo, former Korle Klortey Chairman, Nii Noi Nortey who is contesting Lawyer Philip Addison, Andy Kankam and Madam Serwah Akoto, the Deputy National Communication Director of the NPP who is also vying for the seat at Abetifi.
