Three Die After Inhaling Toxic Fumes

Three miners were on Thursday morning killed as a result of a mining accident that occurred at Gbane,a mining community in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region.

The deceased whose bodies have been deposited at the morgue of the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital reportedly inhaled toxic fumes that emanated from blasts during the mining activity.

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Upper East Regional Police Command,Assistant Superintendent of Police( ASP) Mr.Thomas Agbanyo who confirmed the incident in an interview with the Daily Graphic at Bolgatanga on Friday said five of them have been treated and discharged at the Hospital. 

He further said six of them were still on admission and one in critical condition at the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital.

The police PRO said the issue was still under investigation.

The Public Relations Officer(PRO) of the Shaanxi Mining Ghana Limited(SMGL)Mr. Maxwell Wooma also told newsmen that in all 17 miners were trapped and in danger but were immediately rescued and rushed to the hospital.

Mr.Wooma also indicated that not all the 17 miners were affected by the toxic smoke. 

He explained that the company was yet to come to terms with how the fumes entered the tunnel where the victims were mining since the blasts that brought about the smoke occurred in a different tunnel.
