"Develop A Good Compensation Package"

Wednesday, July 15, 2009 in Accra. It was under the theme: Positioning The Transport Sector For The Exploration Of Ghanas Oil and Gas. Delivering his keynote address, the Minister of State for Public Sector Reform, Hon. Alhassan Azong who represented the Vice President said, our high hopes in oil discovery would be dashed if we are not able to take advantage of its full exploration. He assured Ghanaians that, government would create and develop the necessary infrastructure for the project. The Vice President also spoke against oil spillage which can create serious environmental challenges. He therefore urged the participants to come out with a policy that can be made to benefit all. The Minister of Transport, Hon. Mike Hammah, reiterated that oil revenue would support governments development efforts and temper the impact of the volatility of crude oil prices on the economy. He stressed that, the oil and gas generation will provide employment for many Ghanaians, through transportation as well as services such as banking, insurance, logistics, and warehousing where many of our citizens would be engagedin. Mind-boggling issues which came from the Finance Ministry at the function include how much to save for the future and how we have to make sure that funds are not wasted. The chairman of the conference, Professor Kofi Awoonor, reminded the participants about the village dwellers on the oilfields, their farms and source of livelihood, as well as the risk of pollution. He charged them to develop a good compensation package for the affected persons.
