Pay Heed To Fire Safety Education - GNFS

Mr Philip Arhin Mensah, the Ashanti Regional Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), has appealed to the public to pay attention to fire safety campaigns to help reduce fire outbreaks in the country.

He said lack of attitudinal change among the populace despite the continuous educational campaigns across the country was a serious drawback to efforts by the GNFS to curb or reduce frequent needless fire outbreaks in homes, market places and factories.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency after an educational campaign programme to mark the annual fire safety week celebration in Kumasi on Friday, Mr Mensah urged the public to adhere to basic fire safety measures in their homes.

He said increasing domestic fire outbreaks and its attendant fatalities in some parts of the country should be a wake-up call to all to abide by safety measures whiles also avoiding acts that could cause domestic fires.

Mr Mensah said public education campaigns were critical and the Service would continue to educate the public to help reduce the menace especially in homes and public places.

The Service mounted a photo exhibition on fire hazards and a simulation exercise of how fires could be doused in homes.

The event attracted students from some senior high schools in the Kumasi Metropolis.

Mr D.E Ackah of the Safety Division stressed the need for many exit routes in homes to enable residents to escape during fire outbreaks and other emergency situations.
