Movement For Change: 1st Lady And Others Must Condemn Alhaji Halidu

We have learnt with utmost shock and total dismay about the unsavoury and reckless insults and attacks on some female celebrities who called on President Mahama to show leadership and end the monstrous "dumsor" menace.

Alhaji Halidu Haruna, an aide to President Mahama and a presidential staffer, after the female celebrities voiced their concerns about dumsor, took to his facebook wall and posted that "those celebrities ( Yvonne Nelson, Lydia Forson, Becca, Ama .K. Abebrese and Afya) who are above the age of 30 years and not married responsible?

As though this was not enough, he continued by stating that: "What are they waiting for? Is it the PROSTITUTION that they are engaged in which has turn their mind upside down and they don't sound reasonable again? "I have  no respect for PROSTITUTES. Let them say whatever they want to say."

This unwholesome comment is not only an attack on these celebrities but on women in general. In this day and age when women are being encouraged to participate in nation-building, this cowardly attack by the member of John Mahama's government leaves much to be desired.

So the wrong doing of these young women is that they added thier voices to the cries of all Ghanaians who are suffering from the hell visited on them by dumsor these last 3 years?  Is it not the case that before election 2012 the President said "the load shedding is as a result of an act of God and  that it will be over in 2013"?

The president again in 2013 was emphatic when he said  "the load shedding is as a result of inadequate gas supply from Nigeria and that once we complete our own Atuabo Gas plant, the load shedding will be over in 2014". In 2014 Ghanaians were treated to another unending promise that the load shedding is as a result of low level of water in the Bui and Akosombo Dam and that it will be over by December 2014".

Subsequent to these unfufilled promises, we were again told that some power barges have been procured and awaiting arrival in April 2015, but just last week we were told that its rather in september 2015. After all these promises, the energy crisis is rather worsening. So what is so wrong if these female celebrities share the concerns of the ordinary Ghanaian about dumsor? They are complaining because they are also affected by dumsor.

By his comments, Alhaji Halidu Haruna, the presidential staffer and the member of the NDC, is alluding that all ladies above 30years who are not married are prostitutes and irresponsible. His statement is reckless and highly irresponsible to say to the least.

We are by this statement calling on the the First lady, Mrs Lordina Mahama, the Minister for women, children and social protection, all female Members of parliament and the civil society to condemn in no uncertain terms the irresponsible comments from Alhaji Halidu Haruna.

We also call on President Mahama to rein in his "attack dogs", who have suddenly forgotten where they came from some 6 years ago. Their actions confirm the adage that "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely"
