Two Expats Killed At Akwamufie; Assailants On The Run

Two African American women have been allegedly murdered by unknown assailants on the outskirts of Akwamufie in the Asuogyaman District in the Eastern Region.

They have been identified as Mane Lena, 75, and Diop Nzanga, 69, who are said to have lived in a small settlement near Akwamufie for more than 18 years.

The bodies of the two were discovered in a shallow grave near the town yesterday morning.

A police source told the Daily Graphic that Nzanga and Lena, both retirees, had lived in the country for nearly two decades and dealt in batik and tie-dye.

“They had even applied for Ghanaian citizenship, perhaps dual citizenship,” it said.

It said the two were declared missing by close associates last Tuesday, after it was realised that they had not been seen in public since Monday.

Calls were made to their cell phones but there was no response and efforts to find them proved futile.

The police source said a report was subsequently made to the police, who went to the house where the two lived and began to suspect foul play, for which reason they advised the chief of the area to organise a search party to look for the two.

Search party

A search party was organised yesterday morning, which found a shallow grave in which the two had been buried.

The bodies were subsequently exhumed, under the supervision of health professionals, and deposited at the Police Hospital mortuary in Accra.

No reasons have been assigned for the murder of the two expatriates, but some link it to some community disagreement rooted in chieftaincy matters.

Akwamuhene

Meanwhile, the Omanhene of the Akwamu Traditional Area, Odeneho Kwafo Akoto III, has expressed shock at the murder of the two American ladies and called on the police to intensify investigations into the matter.

He said Akwamus had, over the years, lived with many strangers and settlers, including foreigners, on their land, without any problem and, so the murder of the two ladies was a heinous crime that needed to be investigated fully in order to bring the perpetrators to book.
