Power Barges Will Not End Dumsor - Power Minister

Minister of Power Dr. Kwabena Donkor has charged the media not to wrongly convince Ghanaians that the planned importation of the 2 power barges is the main solution to the power crisis.

This comes seven days after a failed promise by the minister to deliver the barges for the country in April, 2015.

“Let me kindly use this opportunity to inform the media that the fixation on only one solution is not doing the country any good, we are talking about a set of solutions. So the fixation on power badges which is only one element in the solution box does not convey the right message to the rest of the country”, Dr. Donkor stressed.

KarpowerShip Company Limited, the company contracted to build the 2 power ships has confirmed to Citi Business News, Ghana would start receiving power from the first contracted 225 megawatts power ship in September,2015.

The Sales Director of Karpower Ship, Patrick O’drisscoll in an interview said the first power ship which is currently under construction in Istanbul Turkey is between”70 and 80% complete.

The second 225 megawatts power ship is expected to be operating in the country in February, 2016.

Dr. Donkor reiterated his pledge to resign his post on January 1, 2016 if the ongoing power crisis is not resolved before close of 2015.

“We would fix this problem, and I have indicated that come 1 January 2016 if there is still load shedding , I would not sit in this chair , I would have failed and I will sack myself before anyone sacks me”, he stated.

He added that government will stick by the announced timeline by President John Mahama to resolve the power crisis before the close of the year.

Dr. Kwabena Donkor was speaking at the inauguration of 3 different boards for Volta River Authority subsidiary companies including a real estate company, schools and health facilities.
