Girl, 7, Chained By Mother, Stepfather

The Kwahu Tafo Police Command has rescued a seven-year-old girl, chained by her mother and step-father at Dobidi, a farming community in the Kwahu East District of the Eastern Region.

The reason for the act is yet to be known.

The girl, who fell unconscious soon after she was rescued by the police, was taken to the Atibie Government Hospital for treatment.

Her mother, Afua Annorbea, and step-father, Kwasi Asante, both farmers, are currently on the run.

Confirming the incident to The Ghanaian Times, the Kwahu Tafo Police Station Officer, Chief Inspector Seth Ehurem, said the girl was rescued last Sunday, following a tip-off by the unit Committee Chairman who was on a routine patrol in the community.

He said during the patrol, the Chairman, Mr. Adonten Mireku, and his Tema discovered the little girl chained to a beam in the village and informed the police.

Some of the community members also told the police that the girl had been in the chain for one week and was subjected to severe beatings, various forms of maltreatment and hunger by her biological mother and the step-father.

‘Some neighbours told us that the girl was chained by the parents about a week ago, but they were afraid to inform the police due to the parents’ behavior in the community,” he said.

Chief Inspector Ehurem said the police would interrogate the girl after her discharge from hospital about the offence she committed to merit such treatment.

He said the police had mounted a search for the fleeing parents.

He appealed to members of the community to assist the police with all information available to them to facilitate police investigations.
