UT Financial Services and State Insurance Company, on Tuesday donated a cheque for GH�5,500 and eight bags of rice to Angel-Zoe Foundation, a non-governmental organisation assisting women and juvenile prisoners, for the upkeep of inmates at the Senior Correctional Centre in Accra. According to the two companies, the donation was to bring smiles to the faces of the inmates who are grappling with several dehumanizing conditions at the prison.
Mrs Sophia Lissah, Media and Public Relations Manager of UT Financial Services, presented the items to Ms Abena Asomaning, Founder and Chief Executive of the Foundation. She told the inmates that "prison is not your last stop in life", adding that they had the potential to become great persons in life. Mrs. Lissah said the country abounded with many opportunities and advised the inmates to change their lives and make the best out of them.
Ms Asomaning said Angel-Zoe foundation was committed to reaching to prison inmates to help rehabilitate and properly re-integrate them into society after they had been discharged from prison. She said the foundation instituted several programmes including Inmates' Training and Placement Project and Inmates' Emergency Relief Project, which helped to provide pre-discharge orientation for soon-to-be ex-offenders to prepare them for the job market after release.
Ms Asomaning identified other projects such as the Shelter Support, Inmates' Correspondence and the Christian Outreach as some of the initiatives of the Foundation to bring relief to not only inmates but also staff of the Ghana Prison Service. She called on benevolent organisations to support the Foundation to enable it to continue with the good programmes it had initiated. Mr Kwame Kuma Kpeli, Assistant Director of Prison, commended the Angel-Zoe Foundation for its advocacy works which were bringing relief to inmates. Mr Kpeli also thanked the donors for the support to the Centre. As of Tuesday, the total number of inmates was 122, who were all boys.
