Maternal Mortality Still High At Korle-Bu

Maternal mortality rate at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital now stands at 868 deaths per 100,000 expectant mothers. Out of 5,184 expectant mothers who delivered from January to June, this year, 45 died. The highest among them are the first-timer (women) who numbered fourteen, followed by those who already had one child and are going for a second. They numbered ten and at least one woman who already had six children and went in for the seventh child died in the process. The age group of the highest of the maternal mortality is between 31 � 35 years, who were fourteen in number for the first half of this year. There is a marginal decline of maternal mortality at the Korle-Bu Hospital, compared with the 2008 records which stood at 51 and has reduced to 45 this year.
