Dont Shut Down Akosombo Dam

In this era of Dumsor-Dumsor, it will be devastating if the situation gets worse instead of gets better.

It is in this light that the announcement that the Akosombo Dam will not be shut down, in spite of the acute reduction in water levels gives some amount of relief.

The water level over the weekend stood at 239.94 feet just below the required minimum operating level of 240 feet.

There have been fears the continued drop in water level could force a shutdown of the dam and further worsening the current crisis. ‘The Akosombo dam currently sheds some 500 megawatts of power.

But those fears were allayed when Mr. Richard Badger, Deputy Engineer in charge of operations at the Volta River Authority (VRA) told Joy News the dam will not be shut down.

He said there are thermal complements to run the hydro dam during periods where the water levels are low.

This according to him is done regularly to ensure that the water in the dam does not run out completely and prevents a total shut down.

The Enquirer supports the decision not to shut down the Akosombo dam, simply because the country is not enjoying in terms of power supply and to shut the dam in this period of power deficit, will further worsen situations.

We however urge the VRA to put in place a strategic measure aimed at managing the situation well, while the country welcomes the power barges from Turkey, as well as other thermal which are expected to come into stream soon.

It is the hope of the paper that, the era of Dumsor will finally be over and be a thing of the past.

We urge the VRA to endeavor not to shut down the Akosombo dam!
