Confiscate Equipment Of Galamsey Operators

Graduands at the Junior Staff Course (Division) of the Ghana Armed Forces Command and staff college (GAFCSC) Teshie, have suggested the passage of law to confiscate equipment being used by illegal miners.

That, they said, would serve as a deterrent to people who would venture into such activity considering the negative impact that it posed to the nation.

Their recommendation was captured in a report presented by the Assistant Commandant of the College, Commodore J.O. Kontoh, at the 63 graduation ceremony of 50 military officers in Accra on Friday after four months training

He said their recommendation came at the heel of the wanton environmental degradation in the country, saying as part of the course component, the students toured Ashanti Region where they assessed the impact of illegal mining and the activities of Fulani herdsmen.

They also visited the defence industrial holding and the Suame Magazine as well as studied the security implications of youth unemployment among others.

The Assistant Commandant said the suggestion by the graduands had been forwarded to the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources for consideration while a comprehensive one would be forward to the higher headquarters for appropriate action.

Commodore Kontoh course was designed to equip the officers with knowledge to perform staff officer Grade III and Grade II functions by developing their leadership, analytical and communications skills.

The intake, he said, had increased from the previous one of 30 to 50 to enable the college to enroll more students looking at the high number of officers who qualified to pursue the course.

The course, he said, had 13 females, representing more than 25 percent, a significant improvement over the previous intake, adding that the ladies had various professional backgrounds, including medical, legal, ICT and accounting.

The guest of honour, Air Commodore Kwame Manphey (Rtd), commended the officers for successfully passing out.
