Amadu Sulley Must Be Punished For Denting ECs Image Ransford Gyampo

A Senior lecturer at the Political Science Department of the University of Ghana, Dr. Ransford Gyampo, has recommended severe punishment for members of the Electoral Commission (EC), who deliberately commit errors but cannot be fired because they are granted security of tenure.

Just recently, the EC had to suspend its voters registration exercise which was to afford Ghanaians who turned 18 years after the last registration and those who are above 18 years but could not register, the opportunity to do so.

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the rest of the political parties in the country, were incensed over the EC’s decision not to inform them before commencing the registration exercise.

They therefore demanded that the EC convenes an emergency Inter Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting to discuss the matter. The registration was thus suspended pending a thorough discussion of the matter with IPAC.

As at now, no member of the commission has been punished and it is on this note that Dr. Gyampo told
Peace FM that the person responsible for the official faux pas should be punished.

He fingered Mr. Amadu Sulley, the Deputy Commissioner at the EC as the person who could have authorized the commencement of the project without the knowledge of the political parties.

He therefore called for a stiffer punishment to be meted out to him since he has singlehandedly brought the name of the EC into shame.

“What Amadu Sulley has done is a serious misdemeanour that has dragged the name of the Electoral Commission into disrepute. It has brought shame on the EC and as a nation, we must not blame the commission but rather, the person within the commission who caused it. That person must be exposed and punished,” he said.
