Police and military personnel on peace-keeping duties in the Nkonya and Alavanyo conflict area, intervened swiftly on Monday and saved a mentally- deranged man from being lynched by the youth of Nkonya-Ntumda who mistook him for a spy. 

Briefing The Ghanaian Times on phone yesterday, Chief Superintendent Joseph Antwi Gyau, the Hohoe Divisional Commander, said the incident occurred at about 6.30 am when a farmer spotted the stranger who was later identified as Mawuli Adutor, 35, on his farm wearing a police reflector.

He became suspicious, raised the alarm and the youth went to join him to manhandle him.

“The queens and some elders of the community immediately informed the police and military personnel who went to the man’s rescue,” said Chief Superintendent Gyau.

He said investigations revealed that Mawuli, who could not tell the police where he got the reflector from, was from Kpando and of unsound mind.

The Divisional Police Commander said strangers spotted on that stretch of land were often taken for spies by the feuding parties.

At the time of filing this report, the police were expecting Mawuli’s parents from Kpando to go for him.
